The only universal experience shared by all people is our physiological senses with which we perceive the world. Vision is chief among these. Human beings are trichromats - the cones in our eyes perceive only red, green and blue wavelengths of light reflected off of objects in our surroundings.

Our understanding of our perceptions however are interpreted within our brains, shaped by our individual cultures, languages, gender, religious beliefs and histories.

The differences in how each of us interpret and internalize our individual experiences often divide us. We can not know if the world as we see and understand it is shared by anyone else.

To emphasize and explore the physiological means with which we perceive our surroundings.

I use trichromographs - an additive lighting process that I have developed - as a metaphor. Typically, photography observes the subject of the photograph - what we are looking at. Instead, in this work, I examine how we look.

This year, I will be showing new work that is being made specifically for this year's 2025 Sierra County Open Studios. This work is based in the community of Hillsboro: Not only is the subject matter the landscapes of the hills around the town, but the work will be produced with the collaborative efforts of many of the people who live here.

Please come out and see how these delightful illuminations are created!
